PE - Subjects - Loughborough Primary School

PE

At Loughborough Primary school we are committed to providing our children with high quality Physical Education lessons. Through sporting activities children learn to become creative, cooperative and competitive and to face up to diverse challenges both as individuals and in groups. We understand that PE helps to develop students' competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.

PE offers children the opportunities to:

  • Acquire and develop skills: explore basic skills, actions and ideas with increasing understanding; remember and repeat simple skills and actions with increasing control and coordination.
  • Learn how to select and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas: explore how to choose and apply skills and actions in sequence and in combination; vary the way they perform skills by using simple tactics and movement phrases; apply rules and conventions for different activities.
  • Take the initiative, lead activity and focus on improving aspects of their own performance: describe what they have done; observe, describe and copy what others have done; use what they have learnt to improve the quality and control of their work.
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of fitness and health: how important it is to be active; to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during different activities.
  • Receive teaching which ensures that when 'evaluating and improving performance', connections are made between 'developing, selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas', and 'fitness and health'.

PE IMPLEMENTATION

Through sporting activities children learn to become creative, cooperative and competitive and to face up to diverse challenges both as individuals and in groups. We understand that PE helps to develop students' competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.

Our lessons are a continual progression of skills and knowledge, pupils’ understanding of each discipline: Games, Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities is further developed over time.

  • This is consolidated through the opportunity to take part in inter-house competitions and competitions locally across South London. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well- being. These events also develop team-work and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  •
  • Each year a small group of Year 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs, our annual Sports day and any other Sporting activities.

Year 4 pupils also have the opportunity to learn to swim and take part in weekly sessions. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week. In addition children are encourage to participate in sporting competitions and extra- curricular sports clubs

PE IMPACT

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. Our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We foster a love of sport and teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, fairness and equity in order to embed life – long values.

We endeavour to equip our pupils with the necessary tools, knowledge and skills to lead happy, healthy loves utilising the skills and knowledge acquired in PE throughout their school career.

Class teachers and our PE leader work closely with PE specialists to formatively assess pupils. This information is shared with stakeholders at the end of the academic year.
