Curriculum Intent
At Loughborough Primary School, phonics and early reading are really important because they help children learn how to communicate, understand the world and feel confident in their learning. We use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme to teach phonics in a clear, consistent and supportive way, so every child can learn to read successfully. Early reading helps children build their vocabulary, understand stories and information, and access learning across the whole curriculum. Phonics gives children the skills they need to read independently, share their ideas and enjoy books. Reading also supports writing, imagination and thinking skills, helping children grow into confident, curious learners ready for the future.
Our Offer
At Loughborough Primary School, we teach children to read using a structured, inclusive, and engaging approach based on Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. Phonics is taught systematically from Nursery, giving children strong foundations in communication and language, and continues with daily, high-quality phonics lessons in Reception and Year 1. Children take part in regular reading practice sessions with books matched to their phonics knowledge, helping them succeed and build confidence. Any child who needs extra support receives targeted Little Wandle Keep-up sessions. As children move through the school, reading is further developed through guided and shared reading using VIPERS, alongside daily opportunities to read for pleasure. Learning is enriched through library visits, carefully chosen reading texts, author visits, workshops, and curriculum-linked trips, bringing reading to life and broadening children’s experiences..
Impact
By the time children leave Loughborough Primary School, they are confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers with strong understanding of what they read. Using Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, children learn phonics early, helping them to decode, blend and read words accurately. As they grow, they build a rich vocabulary, enjoy reading, and can talk about, understand, and respond to many different types of books. They use reading skills across all subjects, think critically, and read for both pleasure and purpose. Regular checks ensure any gaps are quickly addressed, so every child makes strong progress and leaves ready for secondary school and beyond.
